A sunroom with a view

Linda and David Walker

“We've always lived in houses with large rooms that let in plenty of light and fresh air. That was one thing this house was missing. Adding a sunroom was the perfect way to change that.”

It took just eight weeks for Linda and David to complete the transformation. They used traditional materials to build the large sunroom to help it blend perfectly with its surroundings. Step inside, however, and you'll find more modern touches.

Whereas a conservatory is almost entirely glazed and distinct from the house, a sunroom has one or more insulated walls, built using blockwork or timber frame, and a large proportion of insulated timber roof, either flat or low-pitched, possible with roof windows or atrium. If it is well designed, the room will make the most of views and daylight, while being more energy-efficient and less prone to overheating than a conservatory. Common designs features include folding-sliding or patio doors to create a feeling of bring the outside in. Because the room is more energy-efficient, the building regulations also allow the existing central heating system to be extended to heat the room.

Sunroom - Cost:
Off the shelve solutions - £950 - 1,150 per m2.
A bespoke solution £1,400 - 2,00 per m2.

Conservatory - Cost:
In hardwood £850 - 1,150 per m2.

Sitting in the sun

Mr & Mrs Searle

Mrs Searle wanted to build a multi-functional room where the whole family would gather, to eat, entertain or even just relax and while away an afternoon.

The eight VELUX Roof Windows flood the room with natural light, creating a stunning sunroom effect. It's no surprise that this has quickly become their favourite room in the house.

A labour of love

Jim Isaac

Daylight has been maximised to its fullest potential, reaching even the kitchen. Plus, the mature trees in Jim's attractive garden now form a majestic backdrop. Natural light and fresh air were key to his plans.

A new extension. A new way of life

Mr & Mrs Jones

Eleven years ago, Sally and Steve Jones moved into this beautiful house in the picturesque village of Bramhall, Stockport. A lot has changed since then. Most notably the size of their family. With two rapidly growing children, Penny and Alex, they needed more space. But when you already live in a place dubbed ‘England's Friendliest Village’ moving just isn't an option.

The solution to their problem lay at the rear of the house. Where a large flat roof conservatory had been built to accommodate a swimming pool.

This multi-functional extension has given the Jones family more than just the extra space they needed. But added a whole new dimension to their home.
